      What Is a Phrase?
     In simple words, Phrases reduce the number of words in a sentence,         but conveys the same meaning as of the complete sentence.

A phrase is a group of words that stand together as a single unit, typically as part of a clause or a sentence.

A phrase does not contain a subject and verb and, consequently, cannot convey a complete thought. A phrase contrasts with a clause. A clause does contain a subject and verb, and it can convey a complete idea.


1.   Addendum: an item or items added (परिशिष्ट/ जोड़ी हुई वस्तु)

Ex: The addendum written at the end of the book is very impressive. (पुस्तक के अंत में लिखी परिशिष्ट बहुत प्रभावशाली है।)

2.   Ad hoc: arranged or done (अनौपचारिक) without pre-planning (बिना किसी योजना के)

Ex:All the decisions in this matter are ad hoc. (इस मामले में सभी निर्णय अनौपचारिक हैं।)

3.   Ad nauseam: to the point of annoyance or disgust (घृणास्पद होने तक)

Ex: He repeated the phrase till ad nauseam. (उसने घृणास्पद होने तक बारंबार वाक्यांश दोहराया।)

4.   Aide-memoire: something that serves as a reminder (सहयोगी पत्र)/ a memorandum (पत्र).

Ex: These photos later served as aide-memoires for the large decorative panels. (इन तस्वीरों ने बाद में बड़े सजावटी पैनलों के लिए सहयोगी-पत्र के रूप में कार्य किया।)

5.   A la carte: a menu of dishes that may be ordered separately (व्यंजन सूची से)

Ex: The Hansraj hotel has only an a la carte menu. (हंसराज होटल में केवल एक व्यंजन सूची से है।)

6.   A la mode: in the fashion (प्रचलित)/ served with ice cream( आइस-क्रीम के साथ - noun)

Ex: These types of jeans are a la mode now a days. (आज कल इस प्रकार की जीन्स प्रचलित है।)
