Definition :
Demonetization
is the act of stripping a currency unit of its
status as legal tender.
Demonetization is necessary whenever there is a change of national currency. The old
unit of currency must be retired and replaced with a new currency unit.
The
opposite of demonetization is remonetization where a form of payment is
restored as legal tender.

Demonetize शब्द 1852 में प्रचलित हुआ था। यह शब्द फ्रेंच de (जिसका अर्थ किसी भी कार्य को उलट देने से है- expressing reversal) और लैटिन शब्द moneta (जिसका अर्थ money - पैसा होता है) से लिया गया है। जब किसी देश की सरकार किसी पुरानी मुद्रा को कानूनी तौर पर बंद कर देती है तो इसे विमुद्रीकरण (demonetization) कहते हैं। विमुद्रीकरण के बाद उस मुद्रा की कुछ कीमत नहीं रह जाती। उससे किसी तरह की खरीद-फरोख्त नहीं की जा सकती। सरकार द्वारा बंद किए गए नोटों को बैंकों में बदलकर उनकी जगह नए नोट लेने के लिए समयसीमा तय कर देती है। उस दौरान जिसने अपने नोट बैंकों में जाकर नहीं बदले या जमा नहीं किए उनके नोट कागज का टुकड़ा बनकर रह जाते हैं।
